# Back home after a car rental: what should you check in the weeks that follow?

> A car rental is not fully over when you drop off the keys. In the first days, check that the deposit hold is released and that the final bill matches your contract. Keep your photos, contract, fuel receipt and return report together, because ECC Austria notes that many companies ask for your card to stay valid for at least six months to cover later costs. If an unexpected charge appears, object in writing quickly and note your card issuer's chargeback deadline.

You have unpacked, the photos are on the family chat, and the rental car is a memory. But for the rental company, the file may still be open. Deposits are released, fuel and tolls are settled, fines arrive by post, and now and then a damage claim follows. ==A few small checks in the weeks after your trip make any later charge much easier to answer.== Here is what to do, and when.

## The checklist at a glance

| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Return day | Close off the bill, get a return report, take return photos |
| First evening | Back up photos and video, put all documents in one folder |
| First week | Check the deposit hold is released and the final invoice |
| First month | Check your card statement for new charges |
| Up to six months | Keep the card valid, watch for fines and tolls |
| Any time a charge appears | Object in writing, note the chargeback deadline |

## 1. On the return day: close it off

The Irish consumer authority CCPC advises leaving enough time at return to have the car inspected and to close off your bill before you leave. ECC Austria advises asking for a return report and photographing the fuel gauge and odometer. If the desk was closed, your own photos and video of the car in its return spot are the record. Read [handling the return inspection](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/return/return-inspection-rental-car) and [which photos to take at return](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/return/photos-when-returning-rental-car).

## 2. On the first evening: save everything in one place

Make one folder, on your computer or in the cloud, named after the booking. Put in:

- the booking confirmation and the rental contract;
- the condition report from pick-up and the return report;
- all photos and videos, as original files;
- the fuel receipt from the last fill-up, which ECC Austria advises keeping as proof;
- any messages with the company, broker or insurer.

Back up the photos the same day, before your phone fills up with new ones. Our [evidence mode](https://scratchfair.com/en/evidence-mode) keeps rental photos together with their time and date.

## 3. In the first week: check the deposit

The deposit is usually a hold on your credit card, not a payment. ECC Malta advises asking the company to release the amount held on your card once no damage is found at return. Check your card app a few days after the return: has the hold gone, or has it turned into a charge?

ECC Czech Republic shows why this check matters. It describes a case where more than CZK 10,000 was blocked on a card after the car was returned, and another where only 267 euros of the amounts paid came back, without explanation, until a partner consumer centre stepped in. Read [how a deposit hold works](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/credit-card/rental-car-deposit-hold-explained).

## 4. In the first month: read your card statement

Look for anything you do not recognise from the rental company or broker: a refuelling charge, an extra day, a cleaning fee, a damage amount. Compare each one with your contract and your photos. If a charge has no invoice, ask for it.

> [!TIP]
> Note the date of every unexpected charge in the [deadline calculator](https://scratchfair.com/en/tools/deadlines) on the day you see it. Card issuers set their own time limits for disputing a payment, counted from the charge, and those limits do not wait while you write to the company.

## 5. For six months: keep the card, and an eye on the post

ECC Austria notes that many companies ask for the card to remain valid for at least six months after the rental, so they can charge later costs such as damage or parking tickets. If you plan to cancel or replace the card, wait or tell the company.

Fines from abroad can take months to arrive, often with an admin fee from the rental company for passing on your details. Read [admin fees for traffic fines](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/credit-card/traffic-fine-admin-fee-rental-car) and [traffic fines abroad with a rental car](https://scratchfair.com/en/blog/traffic-fines-abroad-rental-car). Toll charges can also be billed afterwards; the CCPC found that 24% of people with hidden fee problems mentioned tolls.

## 6. If a damage claim or unexpected charge arrives

Do not ignore it, and do not pay straight away either. Konsumentverket notes that you can dispute an incorrect invoice, ask for documentation of the car's condition at return, and ask for evidence that you caused the damage, including repair receipts. If money was taken from your card without a chance to dispute it, you can complain and ask your bank about a chargeback.

Then follow these steps:

1. Reply in writing within a few days, and ask for the company's evidence.
2. Compare it with your own photos and reports.
3. Check the amount with the [amount check](https://scratchfair.com/en/tools/amount-check).
4. Send a written objection. Our [sample letters](https://scratchfair.com/en/tools/letter-templates) help.

Read [a damage claim weeks after the return](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/damage-claim/damage-claim-weeks-after-return) and [what happens after a damage claim](https://scratchfair.com/en/blog/what-happens-after-damage-claim).

> [!WARNING]
> The chargeback deadline is the one people most often miss. If a disputed amount was taken from your card, contact your card issuer early, even while you are still writing to the rental company. Waiting for the company's final answer can mean the card route has closed.

## When the company does not react

ECC Czech Republic notes that if a company does not respond, you can contact the European Consumer Centre. For a company in another EU country, Iceland or Norway, the European Consumer Centre in your own country can help, as Konsumentverket explains for ECC Sweden. See [which European Consumer Centre to contact](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/ecc-and-disputes/which-european-consumer-centre). If you want to see what the company holds on file about your rental, a [GDPR access request](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/dispute/gdpr-access-request-rental-company) can help.

## When can you close the folder?

Once the deposit is released, the final invoice matches your contract, and six months have passed without new charges, the risk of a surprise is small. Keeping the folder for a year costs nothing and covers a late fine or a slow claim.

## FAQ

**How long should I keep my rental car photos and documents?**

At least until the deposit is released and the period for later charges has passed. ECC Austria notes that many companies ask for the card to remain valid for at least six months after the rental, so keeping everything for a year is a safe habit.

**The deposit is still blocked a week after the return. What do I do?**

Ask the rental company in writing to release it, quoting your booking number and the return report. ECC Malta advises asking the company to release the amount held on your card once no damage is found. If the company does not react, contact your card issuer, and for a company in another EU country, the European Consumer Centre in your country.

**Can the rental company still charge my card months later?**

Your contract often allows later charges, for example for fines or tolls. But Konsumentverket notes that you can dispute an incorrect invoice, and that if money was taken from your card without a chance to dispute it, you can complain and ask your bank about a chargeback.
