# Taking your dog in a rental car: what is allowed, and how do you avoid a cleaning fee?

> Whether a dog may travel in a rental car depends on the company's terms: some allow pets, some only in a crate, and some charge a special cleaning fee if hair or smell is found. Rental companies can charge for a dirty car if the terms say so. Secure your dog with a harness, crate or guard, cover the seats and boot, vacuum before the return, and photograph the clean interior. Keep the photos in case a cleaning charge arrives later.

A road trip with your dog can be the best part of a holiday, until a cleaning fee for pet hair appears on your card statement two weeks later. ==With a dog on board, the state of the interior at the return matters as much as the pet rules, because that is where a cleaning fee comes from.== Here is how to check the rules, keep your dog safe, and return the car so a cleaning claim is unlikely.

## Are dogs allowed in rental cars?

It depends on the company and sometimes on the car. Rental companies set their own conditions, so pet rules differ. You can meet:

- a clear yes, sometimes with a fixed pet fee;
- a yes, but only in a closed crate or transport box;
- a yes, with a special cleaning fee if hair, dirt or smell is found;
- a no, for some or all car classes.

ECC France advises asking about possible cleaning costs when you book. If the booking site does not mention pets, read the rental company's own terms, or ask by email before you pay.

> [!TIP]
> Ask the rental company in writing: ‘Can I take a medium-sized dog in this car, and under what conditions?’ Save the reply with your booking. It settles the question if the desk has a different view.

## How cleaning fees work

Konsumentverket, the Swedish consumer agency, lists a dirty car among the things a rental company can charge extra for, if the rental terms say so. ECC Austria advises returning the car clean inside and asking for a return report. For dogs, a charge can cover:

| Issue | What the company may charge for |
|---|---|
| Hair on seats and carpets | Special interior cleaning |
| Mud, sand or paw prints | Interior cleaning, sometimes boot cleaning |
| Smell | Odour treatment, sometimes with the car out of use |
| Scratches or chewed parts | Repair or replacement, as interior damage |

The last row matters most. Scratched door panels, a torn seat or chewed seat belts are not a cleaning issue but damage, and may be charged at repair cost. Check whether your cover includes the interior.

## Secure your dog in the car

A loose dog is a distraction and a risk in a sudden stop. The UK Highway Code, in rule 57, says to make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or injure you or themselves if you stop quickly. It names a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard as ways of doing this. Other countries have their own rules on securing animals and loads, so check them for the countries on your route.

## How to avoid a cleaning fee

## 1. Bring your own protection

Pack a seat cover or blanket for the back seat or boot, and a crate if your dog uses one. A boot liner protects against paw prints and water.

## 2. Photograph the interior at pick-up

Take photos of the seats, carpets, boot and door panels before your dog gets in. Existing hair or stains are then on record. Our [pick-up checklist](https://scratchfair.com/en/tools/pickup-checklist) includes the interior shots.

## 3. Keep the car aired and dry

Dry your dog before it gets in after a beach or forest walk. Open the windows during stops to keep smells down.

## 4. Clean before the return

Vacuum the seats, carpets and boot at a petrol station or car wash. Use a rubber glove or lint roller for hair woven into the fabric. Remove any blanket and check the door panels for scratches.

## 5. Photograph the clean car and ask for a check

Take photos and a short video of the interior at the return, with the time visible. If staff are present, ask them to check the interior with you and sign the return report. See our guide to [photos when returning a rental car](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/return/photos-when-returning-rental-car) and to the [return inspection](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/return/return-inspection-rental-car).

> [!WARNING]
> Returning a car through a key box, with no staff present, makes it harder to show the interior was clean. If you travel with a dog, it helps to return during opening hours, or to film the interior in detail before you drop the keys.

## Crossing borders with your dog

If your trip takes you into another country, your dog has its own travel rules, separate from the rental car. Your Europe explains that a dog travelling between EU countries needs a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and a European pet passport, and that a tapeworm treatment is also required for Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway and Northern Ireland. Check the rules well in advance: after a first rabies vaccination, there is a waiting period of at least 21 days. Also check that your rental car may be driven there: read [driving a rental car to another country](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/rules/driving-rental-car-to-another-country).

## If a cleaning charge arrives

Ask for photos of the hair, dirt or smell, the date of the inspection and the cleaning invoice. Compare them with your own photos from the return. If the charge is for hair you can show you removed, or for marks that were there at pick-up, object in writing. Our [sample letters](https://scratchfair.com/en/tools/letter-templates) help you word it, and our article on [wear and tear or damage](https://scratchfair.com/en/knowledge/damage-claim/wear-and-tear-or-damage) explains where the line sits for small marks.

## A short example

You rent an estate car in Austria for a week with your Labrador. The terms allow pets but list a special cleaning fee. You use a boot liner and a seat cover, vacuum the car on the last morning, and film the clean interior at the return desk, where the agent signs the report. Ten days later, no charge has arrived, and your video stays in your rental file just in case.

## FAQ

**Can a rental company refuse my dog?**

Yes. A rental company can set its own conditions, and some do not accept pets, or only in a closed crate. Assistance dogs can be a different case, so ask the company directly and get the answer in writing. Check the terms before you book, not at the desk.

**How much is a cleaning fee for dog hair?**

There is no standard amount. Some companies list a fixed special cleaning fee in their terms, others charge the actual cost. Look up the amount before you book, so you can compare it with the price of a seat cover and a vacuum at a petrol station.

**The company says it found dog hair, but I cleaned the car. What can I do?**

Ask for photos of the hair or stains, the date of the inspection and the cleaning invoice. Send your own photos of the clean interior at the return. A small amount of hair after a thorough vacuum can be closer to normal use than to damage.
