What is a chargeback?
A chargeback is a request to your card issuer to reverse a card payment. The issuer asks the rental company for its side and decides. It is a procedure of the card schemes, not a law, so rules and deadlines differ per issuer and card.
When does it make sense?
- The company charged your card for damage you dispute.
- You objected in writing and got no answer, a refusal or no evidence.
- You can show your side: contract, forms, photos, your objection.
Step by step
- Object in writing to the rental company first and keep a copy.
- Look up the chargeback or dispute form of your bank or card issuer, usually in the app or on its website.
- Note the deadline. It often counts from the transaction date.
- Fill in the form: date, amount, merchant, and why you dispute the charge.
- Attach your evidence: objection letter, contract, pick-up and return forms, photos.
- Keep track of the answer and reply on time if the bank asks for more.
What to attach
- Card statement with the charge
- Your written objection and any answer
- Rental contract and terms
- Pick-up and return forms
- Your photos and video with date
Debit card?
Some debit cards have a similar dispute process, but protection differs per bank. Ask your bank.
